Expanding Your Horizons

In Science & Mathematics™

The EYH program is a conference for middle school girls to expose them to various careers in science, engineering, mathematics and technology. The AAUW-Tyler branch
brought the program to Tyler Junior College in 1992 and has worked in conjunction with
them ever since to hold the conference.

Adult female role models who are working in professions in these areas present short
class sessions with hands-on activities. This enables the students to get a feel for different
careers and helps them with making decisions in high school as to what curriculum they
need to take to prepare for that career.

Role models have included:

• Zoo Keepers
• Veterinarians
• Medical Personnel
• Judges and Lawyers
• Pharmacists
• Accountants
• Pilots

Only 13 girls attended in the first year but in the last few years there have been between
600 - 700 girls in attendance. This is a tremendous amount of growth!

Schools from all over East Texas attend the conference.

• Tyler Middle schools
• Whitehouse
• Longview
• Troup
• New Summerfield
• Alba-Golden
• and many more!

AAUW-Tyler branch provides a co-chair to work with TJC to plan the program, secure the
role models, stuff goodie bags for the girls and plan an Adult Workshop for the teachers
and parents. In addition, AAUW provides many volunteers on the day of the program to
help with the registration.

EYH is another way AAUW shows their commitment to EDUCATION!
